Welcome to thericecookershop.com, version 8.0!
As you can see the site is now using it’s own domain, thericecookershop.com, instead of the old ricecooker.kerbau.com. It’s nothing new really. We’ve got ourselves this “new” domain name since March 2007, but it was never used until now. You may ask why, and we’ll sheepishly tell you we’re too dang lazy to sit and roll up our sleeves to migrate the unwieldily database. We foresaw it’s gonna be a huge struggle/job to transfer the thousands of postings, images, user accounts etc. to a new server. Not that we didn’t try; we did and also tweaked the look so many times it’s shameful to tell.
So it took us six years to finally said, fuck it; lets get it over and done with pronto! Luckily in those six years, things have improved greatly in terms of wordpress tech to make migration easier. It was by no means smooth-sailing but we did it in one sitting, one night, last weekend by exporting, tweaking the database and importing using our very own hands; no help was called or hired. We will spare you the technical details but PHPMyAdmin, Text Wrangler and Transmit were used extensively in about six hours of no rest.
So here we are with a new skin, new domain and all the old postings, including the drafts (yet unposted!) and most importantly all the comments which goes back to year 2004! At this point, everything has been transferred, apart from about 13 postings made in the last few months which will be added on in a few days; postings which were made on this new domain BEFORE everything from the old site were transferred. We had to delete them first to import the ancients; these are articles posted during what we called as the brief ricecooker 7.0 era.
So what’s new? Nothing much. Same old shit but this site is now “responsive” and that means if you’re reading this on an iPhone, iPad or any one of those so called “smart-phones”, the page would adjust itself to the small screens (theoretically that it!). Furthermore, we will slash down the too many categories, paring them down to manageable few. Also, since almost everyone is one facebook nowadays, postings made here will automagically appear on our facebook page, thus we wouldn’t need to repeat ourselves over there. And if you’re a facebook user, you can comment/like a certain post as a facebook user, without the need to register or login to this site.
PLANS: will start updating the site again after it being on a hiatus for more than a year!! Also there are attached projects which will be featured here, you’ll see.
Cheers,
Joe
