Wednesday, 2nd August 2006: Hadaka M @ Substation
“There is one single thread binding my way together.” – Confucius
Hadaka is a series of four sound performances featuring acclaimed local and international artists and producers. The central concept of Hadaka is reduction and subtraction, hence its name: to strip down, to denude. The four performances also correspond to the four-colour subtractive model of the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) colour standard. By tearing away the embellishments of structure in music ? the ordered configurations of tonality, melody and and rhythm ? and reducing it to its most primal elements,
Join us for a second installation of the Hadaka sound art series. Magenta further explores the reductive and the subtractive, first introduced in the successful opening, Cyan.
Featuring an assembly of notable sound art producers, Hadaka: M emphasises tonality and continuity through a relay of six solo performances of about twenty minutes each. The presentation of this collusion of sound and method through five bridging segments aims to reduce not only the sonic elements of each individual performance but to subtract the individuality of the performer. This is achieved through the lateral extension of the solo performances, creating a miasmic plateau that is neither hierarchical nor subjective.
Hadaka is conceived by Yuen Chee Wai, researched by Alwyn Lim and Alex Goh.
Hadaka: M, the second in the series, presents a variety of generative techniques & methods, as inherent in the featured artists.
Critically acclaimed Australian sound artist Oren Ambarchi will be the guest in this Hadaka. Other artists include Alwyn Lim, Chong Li-chuan, George Chua, Lionel Tan (T’ang Quartet) and Yuen Chee Wai.
Hadaka: M will feature commissioned visual projections by April Lee and Ricks Ang (Kitchen.)
