SCHOOL OF PRISON – Sound from Hell CD-R
SCHOOL OF PRISON
Sound from Hell CD-R
A school of fish means a group of fish gathered, so “School of Prison” would denotes a bunch of prisons hanging out. Dang! Stay well clear, get inside and lock up your home, homie, there’s a school of prisons cruising and looking for trouble out there. Heh!
I picked this up for free at the This is Hell #3 gig at Noisy last night, popped it in the CD player this morning but it wouldn’t register. Turned out that this is NOT an audio-CD but a CD-R with five 320 kpbs mp3 files! Why can’t the band turn this into an audio-CD before distributing it? Prolly the new generation of young’uns out there just don’t care about any other format other than mp3s anymore. It’s either mp3s or ringtones, fakk the rest. CDs? That’s so old-school, boss! LPs? 7 inches? Vinyl? What’s that, dude?
Anyway, SCHOOL OF PRISON comes from Ampunk (heh!), featuring four young’uns who got together early last year intent in re-creatiing that classic horror-punk sound of THE MISFITS, BALZAC and similar halloween-themed bands. Unlike Jakarta’s amazing, highly-accomplished and cheeky KELELAWAR MALAM who distills the influences right to the raw skulls and bones before giving it a twist of classic Indonesian horror movie trivia and folk legends, SOP is a band finding its feet, barely head above water in the murky, well-pillaged sub-genre that is Horror-Punk.
Out of the five songs here, three are aimed at the MISFITS blueprint but missed their target Рnever achieving the edgy simplicity, the howling intensity and that knowing, grinning “evil-ness” needed. The other two songs veered way further, with Hunt Them almost going old-school HC, and Greed coming close to a mid-tempo stomping hard rock. Basically, these guys still need a lot of work.
That said, I find SOP charming. Personally, a bunch of kids citing THE MISFITS and DANZIG is way preferable than a bunch of kids kneeling at the altars of vile PEARL JAM and EDDIE VEDDER. And so, I’d like to hear more from SOP, with the hope they would go out there and get beaten-up by some vicious zombies. That oughta toughen these boys up a bit, scarred them for life and then truly deliver a banging vengeful fanged-up job upon me ears.
