Capitalism is not the person who consciously decides to make a profit at the expense of some poor punk label (the common image of the corporate ‘killing’ of punk), but rather imbues all our transactions – down to your recent purchase from AK Press.

Are we only able to express our political anger through manufactured music? Is there something to the idea that once we have already recorded the performance of music that its true moment of expression has passed? Or was Rage Against The Machine right – that by “selling out” they were able to get the message to thousands of college students who would never have thought to buy an $18 Che shirt? It’s all a bunch of questions for me, and maybe that’s the way to go. Maybe there is something to the process of contradiction, where paradox can drive something forward – where the contradictions that constitute punk itself can supply some means for change or an alternative position – even if only temporarily.

It seems that this has gotten so easy that we can commend ourselves for running a tiny label, not fucking over bands, dealing with ‘underground’ distributors, and saying/printing all the politically correct things, that we lose touch with how we are so completely integrated into the very formation that we had naively thought we were rushing into battle against.

Maybe we should merely re-read the lyrics to Crass and others who actually tried (and are trying) to live an alternative rather than trying to sell an alternative; not to copy what they did, but to imagine new ways of living rebellion. Maybe that is this aberration of ‘punk’ that both instills me with hope and haunts me with its inherent contradictions. But ultimately for me, the revolution has to wait – I still have 10 grinding-blast-crust-violence-thrash-core EPs to release onto an already over-saturated commodities market.

    Ah we’re all fucked.
