OCEAN – Here Where Nothing Grows CD
Over the last couple of years Ocean has established themselves as anunparalleled current in the east coast metal scene. Here Where Nothing Grows is their debut full length album of 3 rogue waves clocking in at a full 65 fathoms. This is a slow ancient doom harnessing the deep low end drone of the Earth/Sunn, Burzum’s screams, the crushing heaviness of Buried At Sea, and even the art rock of Mogwai. However, these obvious audio touchstones couldn’t possibly prepare you for Here Where Nothing Grows, an album that can only
happen in one place, by one group in a coastal Maine city nestled against the crashing waves of the cold Atlantic sea.
MERZBOW – Merzbear – CD
Author, activist, painter and sound artist Masami Akita had been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. Inspired by psycedelic rock, free jazz, early electronic composition as well the physical arts, especial Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbau, Masami Akita has created a musical language all his own.
Merzbear is the sixth Merzbow release in his utterly essential Merz series for Important Records. Merzbear pulses and pounds with distorted droning heavy guitar feedback, pulsing noise-blasts and swirling analog sounds of Akita’s distinct EMS Sythi. Like most ofMerzbow’s recordings, Merzbear is a significant document of his ever evolving improvisational style.
Slowly, he’s been moving away from his pure laptop era and re-incorporating elements of his pre-laptop analog days w/ his homemade junk guitar, EMS Synthi & electronics. This hybrid sound brings the past into the present and pounds with total junk-collage Dada urgency as only Masami Akita can do it. Cover art by Jenny Akita.
THE ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO – Just Another Band From The Cosmic Inferno CD
Just Another Band From The Cosmic Inferno is the debut album from the brand new configuration of the Acid Mothers Temple. Drained creatively like ‚Äúdinosaurs on the brink of extinction, Kawabata Makoto decided to disband the highly successful Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO lineup and replace it with something far heavier and much more powerful. Replacing the original lineup are deep-psych heavyweights including members and ex-members of The Boredoms, Ghost, Mainliner and Zeni Geva. With these ultra-heavy epic jams Kawabata Makoto has marked a new direction for his celebrated psychedelic collective. Appropriately, artwork was done longtime AMT fan andSunn O))))/Khanate member Stephen O’Malley
SUISHOU NO FUNE – The Shining Star – Live – CD
Suishou No Fune [soo-ee-sho no foo-nay] was formed in 1999 by guitarists Pirako Kurenai and Kageo. They were quickly acknowledged in Japan for their unique take on Japanese psychedelic traditions but it
wasn’t until their inclusion on PSF’s Tokyo Flashback Volume 5 they became that their international prominance began to grow. Heavy lyrical emotion transcends linguistic barriers and Pirako’s blown out fuzzy free-dream guitar work is an alternate universe psychedelic Japanese shoegaze. They are a forest at night drenched in echoing reverb and soaked with deeply spiritual/emotional melodies. Awash in waves of fuzz Suishi No Fune’s control of detail amidst chaos and heavy emotions is their deepest asset. Here’s to the past. Here’s to the future. Somewhere between Fushitsusha and Windy & Carl there is Suishi No Fune.”The group’s sound runs from massively distended nod-outs that recall parts of the first Fushitsusha album through weird duo tracks that orbit a parallel universe where late-period John Fahey was the prime influence on Charalambides, infernal Dead C/Gate style guitar abuse and achingly beautiful comedown ballads. The twin vocalists are massively different in their approach, with Pirako singing in a high wayward style that’s all throat and no lungs while Kageo works from the other end of the pipes with a ripped Father Yod/Jim Morrison/Keiji Haino polyglot. Simply one of the greatest out-of-nowhere groups to come out of the Tokyo underground in years and the undisputed stars of PSF’s recent Tokyo Flashback 5 compilation.” –Volcanic Tongue
THE ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE MELTING PARAISO U.F.O. – Recurring Dream And Apocalypse Of Darkness CD
Recurring Dream And Apocalypse Of Darkness is the by far the heaviest Acid Mothers Temple record yet. So heavy, in fact, that Kawabata Makoto jokingly said “the album is really heavy, maybe a bit like Sunn o))). hahahaha”
JOHN FAHEY – THE MILL POND & COLLECTED PAINTINGS – CD
The Mill Pond was originally released in 1997 as a double 7″ that went immediately out of print. For it’s 10th aniversary we’re issuing it on compact disc housed in a deluxe letterpressed jacket and including an extensive booklet collecting John Fahey’s paintings for the very first time. Limited edition.
John Fahey had been around since the 1950s, making records (mostly) with just his acoustic guitar. He influenced countless guitarists, from Robbie Basho to Leo Kotke to Jim O’Rourke to Thurston Moore. His
music has been called folk, blues, bluegrass, noise, even (gasp!) new age, so you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get with any of his releases. All of them, almost without exception, though, are excellent.
On this EP, Fahey used heavy reverb, electric slide, feedback and vocals. He gets a bit of help from Jeff Allman, who recorded the songs and adds some electronic noise in spots, and from Scott Colburn, who mixed the tracks, but this record is all Fahey. The Mill Pond further proves that there is only one category into which he fit: truly innovative guitar genius.
“Four ecstatic, lo-fi grabs for the ring of eternity, recorded in Fahey’s Oregon hotel room. Containing the first graspable evidence of John’s throat-singing abilities, this represents the merging of the bull and the china shop. The crudity of the electronics and the delicacy of the stringwork makes for a wonderful match. ” Byron Coley
