HWC Inc.: The Psalms’ EP
From the desk of HWC Inc Co-Owner and Hewhocorrupts front man – Ryan Durkin…
“I had the pleasure of playing with THE PSALMS in Singapore while touring SE Asia with 97-SHIKI. I’ve never been more impressed by a band while on tour. Maybe it was because I had no expectations – not sure – but I left Singapore hoping to get a chance to spread their music.
When I returned to the States I showed Andy their music – he was “sold”. What has resulted is the digital debut of The Psalms “ISHMAEL’S WISHLIST” EP on HWC INC!
As some of you may already know – the label nor the band see any of the money people choose to donate when downloading a release. Rather the money goes to a CHARITY chosen by the band. The Psalms have chosen ACRES as their charity for this release. ACRES was founded by a group of Singaporeans and registered as a society on 24th May 2001. ACRES mission is to create a caring and socially responsible society where animals are treated as sentient beings and where the environment is preserved for future generations.” – Ryan

“As some of you may have noticed we‚Äôve been pretty quiet lately (ie less news updates, signings, etc). However, while things may seem less active from the outside, on the inside we‚Äôve been putting in a lot of thought on the future of the label given how much the selling of music has changed since our inception. Do we keep doing the label as is? Stop completely? Change our approach and continue? While thinking through these options we reflected on what we like and don‚Äôt like about running a label. In summary ‚Äì we like helping bands we enjoy and we don‚Äôt like or necessarily feel the need to spend money doing so anymore given the many ways one can release, distribute, and promote music today.
After thinking about these things – we’ve decided to change how the label operates. After releasing HWC023 “Locrian / Harpoon” split 7” we will cease releasing music on physical formats. Instead – we will transition to a digital-only release model. This model will no longer focus on releasing “records” but rather individual tracks or a group of tracks. The two more unique elements of this model will be its “name your price” and “charity” aspects. To clarify – we will be using a newer web application called Band Camp to allow those interested in our releases the opportunity to set their own price for the tracks they want to download. Furthermore, any band that releases a track or tracks on the label will be asked to pick a charity that will be the sole recipient of all money collected from the release. This means no money will be passed on to the label or band – only to a predetermined charity.
We are excited to announce that our friends in THE PSALMS will be our first release under this model. 97-SHIKI had the pleasure of playing with THE PSALMS in SINGAPORE on our SE ASIA tour in Fall of 2008 and we’ve been dying to do something with them ever since.
