Earthquake Struck Yogyakarta: More Than 3000 Reported Dead
Those of us who have friends living around the city of Yogya, do make enquiries now. Earthquake struck Indonesia again. This time south of Yogyakarta and thousands are dead.
“More than 3,000 people were killed today and thousands injured when a powerful earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Java.
The quake hit one of the most densely populated places on earth, flattening large swaths of built-up areas.
The tremor, which measured 6.2 on the Richter scale, happened at 5.54am (23.54BST) around 15 miles south of the city of Yogyakarta. In less than a minute, the roofs of homes caved in, many on top of sleeping inhabitants, and hotels and government buildings collapsed” – from The Guardian on-line report today.
