Calling for Participants: Scripted Bodies | Beginning August 21st 2005
Reka Art Space in collaboration with KRYSS (Knowledge and Rights for Young People Through Safer Spaces) will be running a visual arts project entitled SCRIPTED BODIES beginning 21 August 2005. We are looking for 6 – 10 visual artists below the age of 35 to participate in this project.
WHAT THIS IS ABOUT
Using the image of the human body as a visual motif and the basis for exploration, this project aims to look at how various ideological and political forces inscribe themselves on our bodies, affecting the way we regard ourselves and each other, groom, move, act and interact.
We will consider the role these forces play in shaping attitudes towards our bodies especially in relation to issues of identity, gender and sexuality.
PROJECT STRUCTURE
The project will comprise three main components:
– a workshop held over 6 Sundays beginning 21 August 2005, that will orient 6 to 10 visual artists below the age of 35 on the issue of the body as inscribed text
– video documentation of the change process in terms of perceptions and mental frameworks around the body and sexuality that the participants experience
– exhibition of the resulting art work on 20th October 2005 at Reka Art Space
WORKSHOP
For the proposed workshop, 6 to 10 artists under the age of 35 and working in a variety of media, will be expected to meet three Sundays in a row in Reka Art Space and work with facilitators in different workshop sessions delivered on religion, culture and sexuality.
Following which the artists will work individually on their various projects for a further 3-4 weeks, meeting regularly at Reka Art Space for peer critique sessions.
VIDEO DOCUMENTATION
During the period of the workshop, video documentation will be carried out to capture the process of change or non-change with a primary focus on the artists, their thoughts, views and reactions to the workshops, about their work, in their work spaces and interviews by the curator.
OUTPUTS/IMMEDIATE OUTCOME
The resulting art-work will be exhibited for 3 weeks at Reka Art Space, opening 20th October 2005 while the video documentation will form the basis for a paper to be presented by KRYSS at the 10th AWID* International Forum in Bangkok on 27th October 2005. In the event that art-works are sold in the exhibition, proceeds will be shared by the artist, Reka Art Space and KRYSS, to be channelled towards funding for future workshops.
